This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially strong, experienced technology leader to join a highly regarded, world-renowned organisation which is at the forefront of the development and delivery of national programmes designed to deliver economic, societal, scientific and international benefits.  From the North West base and working collaboratively with Universities, Scientific Facilities, National Campuses and Industry, the Technology Department is a provider of large and complex instrumentation and support, both within and outside the UK.  As such, the department is tasked to proactively meet the future needs of academic and industrial science communities, be externally focused and pursue collaborations and commercial partnerships whilst encouraging, engaging and inspiring scientists and engineers to deliver exceptional programmes for the future.

Reporting to the UK Director of Technology with a strong relationship to the Head of the North West facilities, the appointee will be responsible for strategic leadership of the Division, comprising c.100 engineers, technicians and scientists supporting projects across the national programmes.  With a strong understanding of instrumentation and experience of nationally important research partners, the appointee will welcome industrial collaboration and develop strong external relationships to oversee the business development activities of the site.  The role carries full budget, line management and H&S responsibility for the divisional team and the incumbent will work closely with the Director to contribute to technology, policy and corporate development across the organisation.  This is a senior and influential role and the right individual will enjoy the opportunity to contribute to the overall long-term development and commercial growth of the wider business.  As such, cultural fit will be of paramount importance, as will an entrepreneurial and international approach to develop and deliver this Division’s aspirations.

Candidates, ideally qualified to high academic or professional level in Physics or Engineering with a strong technical profile and a demonstrable reputation will have experience of the inspirational leadership of similar sized organisations or projects, deliver strategic development and be comfortable to lead and organise experienced teams to deliver desired outcomes.  The individual will possess a high level of integrity, the desire to build strong relationships both internally and externally along with the development and successful closure of new business opportunities.  The appointee will demonstrate drive, tenacity, ‘presence’ and strong financial awareness coupled with exemplary communication & presentation skills.  Listening, influencing and negotiation will all be key competencies along with strong analysis and decision-making skills and a positive, enthusiastic outlook which will engage others to deliver exceptional results.
